Old man Winter is knocking at our door. Our Fall pattern has switched to cooler water techniques. We have been landing a large variety of fish these past few weeks. Pompano, Speckled Trout, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish just to name a few. One of the most important things to remember when targeting fish this time of year is to slow it down and size it down. With the cooler water the fish react slower so you must work your lures slower than you would in warmer waters. The food source has also switched from finger mullet that are 5" to 6" long to smaller baitfish 2" to 3" in length so it is important to what we like to call matching the hatch.
Some good lure selections this time of year are small suspending twich baits and soft plastic grubs. Yo-Zuri 3-D minnow has been landing virtually everything for us recently when we are working 3 foot plus of water and with the numbers of Ladyfish, Jacks, and Pompano it can be very action packed with a fish on almost every cast. Look for large Seatrout to move into the shallow water grass flats later in the morning to warm themselves. A Gulp shrimp or small soft plastic rigged with a 1/8oz head and worked slowly across the bottom has been a deadly tactic for some large Seatrout and Redfish.
