Winter Time Snook

Winter Time Snook

Catching Snook in the Winter months of the year is not the most common species targeted when going out on a fishing trip this time of year. If you follow a couple simple guidelines you stand a good chance of boating a large Snook in the backwaters this time of year.

1) Seek out warmer water!! Look for waters that are protected from North winds. The water temperture can be as much as 8 degrees warmer than unprotected waters. One sure sign other than having a temperture gauge you are in warmer water is if your seeing a lot of Manatees in the area. Since they are warm blooded like us they are looking to stay warmer.

2) Think smaller and slower. With the cooler water the Snook will be slower to react to feeding response. I use a lot of small suspending baits this time of year.

Good areas to find warmer water are things such as marinas, deep back-water canals off the main body of water. Generally these places have a muddy bottom which acts like a radiator and holds in heat from the sun and the fish will lay over it to warm themselves. Look for warming trends of a few days between the cold fronts. Generally the fish will go into a feeding pattern right before the front passes through and the barometer starts to fall.
